In the 1970's, a Nigerian musician named Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat - a fusion of West African highlife music with western jazz and funk music in a big band format with lots of horn players, singers and percussionists. Fela was also an outspoken critic of the rampant corruption in Nigeria, and paid for this dearly at the hands of the Nigerian government given his frequent beatings, arrests and jailings. Fela died of Aids in 1997.

But his music lives on through his son, Femi Kuti....

Femi Kuti joined Fela's band as a teenage sax player in the 1980's. Femi later went on to form his own band, Positive Force in 1986.

Femi Kuti, an accomplished and very successful international musician with a string of successful albums and awards to his credit - performs June 13th at the 9:30 club in Washington DC.

In the case of the Kuti's, the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree.
