In the 1970’s, a Nigerian musician named Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat - a fusion of West African highlife music with western jazz and funk music in a big band format with lots of horn players, singers and percussionists. Fela was also an outspoken critic of the rampant corruption in Nigeria, and paid for this dearly at the hands of the Nigerian government given his frequent beatings, arrests and jailings. Fela died of Aids in 1997.

But his music lives on through his son, Femi Kuti….

Femi Kuti joined Fela’s band as a teenage sax player in the 1980’s. Femi later went on to form his own band, Positive Force in 1986.

Femi Kuti, an accomplished and very successful international musician with a string of successful albums and awards to his credit - performs June 13th at the 9:30 club in Washington DC.

In the case of the Kuti’s, the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree.

This Thursday, 07/12 One lucky commentator will win a pair of tickets to see Femi Kuti perform at the 9:30 club.

Here are the contest rules:

1. You must be over 21.

4. You are responsible for picking up the tickets at the concert location. If you are the winner you must provide a valid cellphone # for us to contact you

5. The contest ends 07/12/07 at 5pm prompt. Doors open on 07/13 at 9pm. Winner must be available to pick up tickets between 8pm - 8:45pm at the venue location, 815 V St, NW Washington DC on 07/13.

Failure to adhere to ALL of the above contest rules will result in forfeiture of your tickets.
